The US Civil War was the first war in which US soldiers found the need to identify themselves in case of their death knowing as they did that they had a high chance of dying and that it could be days, weeks or months until their bodies were recovered. On both sides in the American Civil Ware soldiers used paper pinned to their tunics to identify themselves and who their families were and where they were.

The US started using dog tag style identification officially in 1906: the first major war in which it was used then was the First World War where other forces including Britain and her commonwealth were already using dog tags.

The First World War American Dog Tags necklaces were aluminium already but were at that time round, they included the regiment or corps of the wearer and only one tag was worn rather than two at first.  It was in 1918 that the serial number system was first created and from then onwards a dog tag included a serial number to make positive identification much easier as each number was unique.

Dog Tags - Dog tag necklaces

DuzzleArt.com

For those with a passion for collecting and also a passion for history including military history a collection that fits both interests is actually not that easy to find. Many people collect models of vehicles or soldiers or books about military history but there is nothing like actually holding a piece of history. For most people buying old military vehicles or even uniforms is going to be too expensive to even get one good example, with other very collectable items such as medals or epaulettes for example prices are still high and the size of a collection will always be limited. Dog tag necklaces though are much more common and much cheaper as for around a hundred years they have been issued out to every soldier in the US Army and to many others around the world. It was in fact the Prussians, during the Franco Prussian war of 1870-1871, that first used dog tag necklaces and a form of identification for soldiers was also used during the American Civil war a few years later, though to begin with these were pieces of paper pinned to the soldiers tunics.

International Buildings that are works of Art

Art and creativity can be found worldwide, even in the architecture of buildings. One can look at some of these elaborate buildings and evolve an entire novel, movie or painting based around them. Here are some of my favorites, whether it be their beauty, ugliness, or outlandishness, there are all truly unique.

Movie “The Rite”

Being a fan of the original Exorcist movie, I caught The Rite at the theater tonight. I thought it would be as entertaining, but sadly it wasn’t. The beginning dragged with the setup of the young man, Michael, a non-believer, becoming a priest, and leaving his family run business of embalming. He goes under the apprenticeship of Father Lucas to conduct exorcisms and that’s where the adventures are supposed to begin.

I had a hard time staying awake as the pace of the entire movie was slow and predictable. The few exorcism scenes were entertaining for a few minutes, with the body contortions and foul speeches. I’d have rather watched it on Netflix, where I could doze off on my couch.

“Black Swan” Movie

I thought the Black Swan was an exquisitely intriguing movie. The star, Natalie Portman, is selected as the prima ballerina for ‘Swan Lake’. But with an over controlling mother, a seductive director who wants her to embody both the angel and devil in her performance, and peers who will go to no ends to sabotage her big break, her goes a bit mental, to say the least.

The ballet performances are stunning. The sinister, macabre, evil and twisted motives of all the different characters makes you really pay attention and gets you ready for the grand finale at the end.

The Art of Body Suspension

What is it about suspending one’s body in the air via hooks in the skin that draws such an appeal? Could it be to go into deeper meditation, obtain spiritual enlightenment, challenge one’s physical limitations, or all the above?

It seems to have started with a native American tribe, the Mandan tribe, which used it for ritual purposes. In modern times, it has been popularized by acrobatic or theatrical performances, as seen below, in the video.

“Season of the Witch” Movie

I saw “Season of the Witch” over the weekend, despite all the bashing of it by the critics. I could see where if one was searching for technical perfection, this movie would be far from it. But it was about magic, knights and witches, with action, humor, suspense, a bit of gore and a few cool visuals, so I was entertained for the entire 1-1/2hrs of watching it and didn’t doze off once.
